Oh Canada!
We crossed Lake Ontario yesterday. It was not as we expected or hoped for. All the weather sites indicated the wind would abate and the lake would be calm by Friday, July 4, 2025. It was the day to go 41.5 miles across open water. The weather bouy’s were indicating 1.9 foot waves where they were located. Well, we had about 3 foot swells from the west and about two foot choppy waves coming from the north. Does this look like calm water?
When we were about an hour from landing in Canada, we called the Nexus entry line for Canadian customs. They asked the usual questions, do you have: cannabis, cigarettes, liquor, food. I answered that yes we had liquor and food as part of our ship stores. In the past, when I mentioned the magical words “as part of our ships stores” they would not ask for any more information. My customs agent asked how much liquor we had on board and I was truthful. People are only allowed to bring a small amount into Canada, 750 ml per person. However, there is a loop hole when liquor is part of ships stores to be consumed on the boat. My customs official did confirm with me that we would not be taking it off the boat. Oh Oh, there is a large group of loopers at our Canadian marina today and they are planning a get together (docktales) this evening and tomorrow evening on shore.
In the video, you will see a crazy amount of seaweed and grass growing in our assigned slip. It was so thick, it temporarily stopped the bow thruster from working. We had to kick it out of the unit by thrusting the other direction. It cleared and we were able to dock.
We have made it to Trenton, Ontario. On Monday, we plan to start the Trent Severn canal. We plan on ending up in Georgian Bay, north of Lake Huron in about 1 to 2 weeks. We did skip the Thousand Islands, but we will see similar topography after we pop out of the Trent Severn.
Oh Canada, why do you charge so much to pump out the sanitation system? Friends of ours did not realize that Canadian marinas charge for the service. They were asked if they wanted to pump out after fueling. It added $31.00 cdn to their fuel bill.
